- Dry Ice Cleaning -

Introduction to Dry Ice

Dry Ice is solidified carbon dioxide and is used across the globe as a solution for surface cleaning, surface preparation and parts finishing in a wide range of industries. It is a preferred method because it is non-abrasive, non-conductive, non-toxic and does not create secondary waste. It is an environment friendly cleaning and surface preparation technique that will help you cut costs, decrease cleaning time and reduce labor allocated to cleaning projects.

How Dry Ice Blasting Works

Dry ice blasting combines three primary factors to remove contaminants:

Energy Transfer - Pellet Kinetic Energy

Dry ice is accelerated by compressed air through a nozzle at supersonic speed. When the dry ice collides with the surface it creates a kinetic effect causes the contaminants to loosen and break apart.

Temperature - Thermal Shock

The extreme cold of the dry ice pellets (-79 degrees) hitting the surface creates a micro thermal shock between the surface and the contaminant. This creates stresses, shrinking and cracking of the contaminant further dislodging it from the surface.

Gas Pressure – Sublimation

Upon impact, the extremely rapid heat transfer between the pellet and the surface causes the dry ice particles to sublimate, or expand instantly, and return to the natural gas state and disappears back into atmosphere leaving no residue.

Dry Ice Pellets

Dry ice pellets are small, cylindrical pieces of solid carbon dioxide (CO₂), approximately 3 mm in diameter, with a temperature of about -78.5°C (-109.3°F). They are used in dry ice blasting for cleaning surfaces, in cooling applications for preserving items during transport, and for creating special effects like fog. Unlike regular ice, dry ice pellets sublimate directly into CO₂ gas without turning into liquid.

Dry Ice Blasting Machines

Done & Dusted's Dry Ice Blasting machines are specialized tools that use compressed air to propel 3 mm dry ice pellets at high speeds for cleaning surfaces. The pellets impact the surface, sublimate into gas, and help remove contaminants like dirt and grease without leaving residue. This method is effective for cleaning delicate equipment and is widely used in industries for maintenance and surface preparation.

Benefits of Dry Ice Cleaning

Effective and Efficient Cleaning

Dry ice cleaning is one of the most effective methods for removing stubborn contaminants from a variety of surfaces. Unlike traditional cleaning techniques, it works without the need for harsh chemicals, water, or scrubbing. The dry ice pellets are accelerated at high speeds, hitting the surface and instantly sublimating.

This combination of impact and rapid gas conversion ensures thorough cleaning of surfaces, from industrial machinery to delicate electrical components. As a result, it’s not only highly efficient but also minimizes the need for manual labor, offering quicker results with less downtime.

Safe for Operators and the Environment

Safety is a priority in any industrial cleaning process, and dry ice cleaning offers an advantage over conventional methods. Since dry ice is non-toxic and non-flammable, it poses minimal risk to operators, making it a safe cleaning solution for various industries.

Unlike chemical cleaning methods that can release harmful fumes, dry ice cleaning doesn’t expose workers to hazardous substances. It also creates a safer work environment by eliminating risks associated with exposure to toxic chemicals, water damage, or fire hazards.

Non-Abrasive and Damage-Free

Dry ice cleaning is an inherently non-abrasive method. It’s ideal for cleaning delicate surfaces such as electrical components, precision machinery, and molds without causing any damage. Since dry ice sublimates on impact, it doesn’t scrape or scratch surfaces.

This makes it perfect for industries that require frequent cleaning of sensitive equipment, such as aerospace, automotive, and food processing. The ability to clean without damage ensures that machinery continues to perform optimally while extending its lifespan.

Environmentally Friendly

One of the most significant advantages of Dry Ice Cleaning in India is its environmental friendliness. Dry ice is made from recycled carbon dioxide (CO2), which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. By repurposing CO2, dry ice cleaning reduces overall carbon emissions, contributing to a more sustainable process.

Additionally, it eliminates the need for water and chemicals, making it a zero-waste solution. This eco-conscious approach aligns with modern sustainability goals, making dry ice cleaning a smart choice for businesses looking to reduce their environmental footprint.

No Residue or Secondary Waste

Dry Ice Cleaning leaves no residue or secondary waste. The dry ice pellets sublimate upon contact with the surface being cleaned, turning into gas and leaving no harmful debris behind.

This not only makes clean-up easier but also ensures that no additional waste is generated, unlike with abrasive cleaning methods that leave behind dust, dirt, or chemicals. The absence of secondary waste means that there’s no need for costly disposal procedures, making it a cost-effective solution in the long run.

Time-Saving

Time is money, and in industries where uptime is critical, dry ice cleaning saves valuable time. The cleaning process is faster than traditional methods, as it requires minimal setup and doesn’t involve lengthy drying times or chemical treatments. For instance, dry ice cleaning can remove grease, grime, and contaminants much more quickly than water or chemical-based cleaning processes.

Additionally, there is no need to disassemble equipment, reducing downtime and allowing businesses to resume operations faster. This makes dry ice cleaning an ideal solution for industries with high operational demands, where every minute counts.
